Selkirk is a busy town on the main A7 road through the Scottish Borders. It is situated at the west end of the valley of the Ettrick Water about a mile upstream of its confluence with the River Tweed.

Selkirk's history has been closely tied to the textile industry in the Scottish Borders. Nowadays the textile industry still exists but in a much reduced form, and the town has diversified into more varied commercial pursuits.
